Why Homemade Pop Tarts Are So Popular
There are many reasons why homemade pop tarts have become so popular in recent years. First, they are much tastier than the store-bought variety. This is because you can control the quality of ingredients that go into them as well as the different flavor Pop Tarts you want to create.
Second, they are cheaper to make than buying them pre-made. Finally, they are a fun project to make with kids or friends. That is why we are making these homemade air fryer Pop Tarts for Halloween this year.
Honestly, if you have never had a warm Pop Tart right out of your own air fryer basket that has that crisp flakey crust, you haven’t had your favorite toaster pastry yet. Yes, I said “yet” as these breakfast pastries only take a few simple ingredients and in a couple of minutes you are back in your childhood.
We Use a Premade Pie Crust
For this recipe, we use a pre-made pie crust. You can find this in the baking aisle of most supermarkets. We like to use the Pillsbury brand, but feel free to use whatever brand you prefer. Just make sure that it is an unbaked pie crust that comes in a rolled up sheet.
I know this is the easy way, but you could use your own pie crust dough recipe if you wanted to. This just makes the pastry dough part of it beyond simple if you are doing this recipe with the kids.
This time? I ended up shopping at Walmart – and got both their Great Value brand pie crust and cookie frosting, as you can see from my pictures below.
Pick Your Favorite Flavor of Jelly
The next step is to choose your favorite flavor of jelly. We used strawberry jelly for these air fryer pop tarts, but you could use any flavor that you like. If you want to be really festive, you could even use a pumpkin spice or apple-flavored jelly. You are only limited by your imagination and pallet.
Where do I Get Cookie Cutters?
In a word: Amazon. You can see a ton of different ghost cookie cutters here – if you are going to order smaller things like this, plan ahead and get a few for the future.
What Air Fyer Do I Like?
I use the Instant Pot Vortex Plus 10 Quart 7-in-1 Multi-Use Air Fryer, Rotisserie, Roast, Broil, Bake, Reheat & Dehydrater that you can see here on Amazon: Instant Pot Vortex.
Create healthier versions of all your family’s favorite fried foods. From fresh or frozen, from air fryer to rotisserie — the Instant Vortex Plus 10-Quart 7-in-1 Air Fryer Oven crisps to perfection with little or no oil. Experience a world of flavor with the touch of a button. Use the preset Smart Programs to easily roast, broil, bake, reheat, air fry, dehydrate or cook on a rotisserie.
Air fryers make juicy chicken wings and crispy fries, onion rings, and other vegetables a big hit. Bake fluffy cinnamon rolls. Roast chicken parmesan, stuffed peppers, and garlic potatoes. Broil a perfectly flaky salmon fillet. Reheat leftovers in a jiffy. You can even dehydrate your own jerky, fruit strips, and even kale chips.
Simple touch controls are easy to use. And the Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven remembers your settings, so your favorites can be made with the touch of a button. Combine space efficiency on your countertop with versatility and say goodbye to your microwave, pizza oven, convection oven, dehydrator, and toaster. Anything they can do the Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven can do better.

What is an Egg Wash?
Egg wash is simply a beaten egg in a small bowl that is used to brush over the pastry before baking. This helps to give the Pop Tarts a golden brown color and also makes them look shiny. It is not necessary, but it does give them a nice finish.
Some people add a splash of water to it.
Pro Tip: If I use an egg wash, I then quickly sprinkle some coarse sugar over the top to give a fun added texture and crunch to the finished toaster pastry.
Ghost Air Fryer Pop Tarts Ingredients
Pre-Made Pie Crust – we talked already about what kind I use.
Jelly – whatever flavor of jam or jelly you prefer. I usually go with strawberry jam or raspberry jam for my fruit filling. I just think these make for the best fillings.
Vanilla Icing – I used the Walmart brand this time, but even the little Betty Crocker or Pillsbury tubs would work.
Chocolate Chips – since these are simply for decor, I go with a semi-sweet chocolate chip.
Cooking Spray – we would hate for your creations to stick to that air fryer basket
How to make Air Fryer Pop Tarts
Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees f.
Roll out the pie crust on a lightly floured surface and cut out ghosts with the cookie cutter.
Place 1 Teaspoon of your jam flavor on every other ghost.
Place a ghost on top of the jelly ghosts and press edges of the dough together with the tines of a fork. This is easiest to do on a flat surface.
Lightly spray each ghost with cooking spray or use an egg wash to help create that golden color.
Place in your air fryer basket wire rack and cook for 5-8 minutes. These will fry really quickly so keep an eye on the cooking time.
Remove them from the air fryer, put onto a cooling rack, and smother them in icing while they are still hot.
Then hurry and add 3 chocolate chips to create two eyes & a mouth.
Serve & enjoy!
If you have leftover Pop Tarts?
You can store air fryer Pop Tarts at room temperature, in a sealed airtight container, for up to four days. I like to layer parchment paper between them so I have a great snack that doesn’t stick to it’s neighbor. If you want to freeze them, I recommend doing so before adding the icing and chocolate chips. That way you can just take out however many you want and then add the fresh icing and eyes/mouth right before serving.
Air Fryer Pop Tart FAQs
Now that we’ve gone over all of the air fryer Pop Tart ingredients and how to make them, let’s answer some common questions that you might have.
Q: Can I use a different flavor of jam?
A: Absolutely! Strawberry jam is my personal favorite, but feel free to experiment with other flavors. Raspberry or blackberry jam would also be delicious.
Q: Can I add sprinkles?
A: Yes! If you want to get really festive, you can add some Halloween sprinkles to the top of your air fryer Pop Tarts. Simply sprinkle them on after you’ve applied the icing.
Q: Do I have to make these in cookie cutter shapes?
A: No! You can make these by cutting out equal rectangles that will fit the size of your air fryer! Just fill them and crimp them the same way.
