Halloween Bat Treats? As Miss Sarah gets older, she is involved in more things and has me running her all over. I still love to make fun treats, I just find myself short on time and need quick solutions like these super easy-to-make bat Twinkies!
I can’t help it – I LOVE bats and have even written about them on my World of Caves site. There is just something magical and mysterious about them, even if they tend to be criminalized by Hollywood as evils of the animal world. It is a good thing that these critters help keep our natural balance with insects in check – a single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects every hour, and each bat usually eats 6,000 to 8,000 insects each night.
Isn’t that awesome?
I love those little fly balls!
Thanks to Hostess Snack Cakes, we can make a treat in their honor – that makes them more approachable and saves you from having to bake Halloween treats. Our Halloween bat Twinkies are one of our favorite Halloween Recipes. Really, who can say no to Chocolate Bats?
I must admit, I was a little worried when Hostess filed for Chapter 11 in January 2012. We were all on a roller coaster and waiting to see if we would ever be able to buy a box of Twinkies again. All Hostess snack cakes were cleared out of each local grocery store and people were starting to sell them on Ebay for $50 and up.
It didn’t take long before the matter was resolved and they were back on the store shelves. (whew!) I can’t tell you the number of times I wanted to grab a box during that time period and couldn’t!
How to make Halloween Bat Treats
You start with store-bought ingredients and the process goes quickly. The final result? 4 super cute Bat Twinkies!
To make Halloween Bat Treats you will need:
- 1 box of chocolate Twinkies
- 1 bag of Ghirardelli melting milk chocolate
- 1 cookie sheet fitted with wax paper
- 1 package of small edible eyes
- 1 disposable piping bag
How to Make Bat Twinkies:
Unwrap the Twinkies and place them onto a cookie sheet and then place them into the freezer for 10 minutes or so.
Using a double boiler, melt the chocolate and stir until it is fully melted and all smooth.
Dip your frozen Twinkies into the melted milk chocolate and fully coat them, before lifting them out of the chocolate with a fork.
Place two edible eyes onto the top part of the Twinkie for the eyes of your bats. This is funny as bats are often thought of as being blind. No, bats are not blind. Bats have small eyes with very sensitive vision, which helps them see in conditions we might consider pitch black. All we really hear of is the echolocation they do and many people assume they are blind.
Scoop the rest of the melted chocolate into the piping bag and cut a small part of the tip off of it to make it easier to create your bat wings.
On a bare part of the cookie sheet, pipe out 8 ‘wings’ for your bats.
Place cookie sheet into the fridge for 20 minutes so that chocolate can harden and your wings will be easier to attach.
Once the 20 minutes is up, lightly peel off the wings and insert them into the sides of your chocolate covered Twinkie, creating your bat!
Are they just so much fun?!?
You will score home runs with the kids, or even your coworkers if you whip up a batch of these vanilla cream-filled treats.
