Do you need a quick, easy and inexpensive fall decoration for your porch or door? This is the perfect project! All you need are three embroidery hoops, some fun fabric pieces, and felt. The great thing about this DIY Embroidery Hoop Pumpkin craft is that it only takes a few minutes of your time to make.
Why do we love to decorate with pumpkins in the fall?
Pumpkins are a great way to add color and warmth in the fall. That bright orange helps the more muted traditional colors of gold, burgundy, and brown just pop to life. It is almost as warm and bright as the fall sunflowers we have all come to adore. I know pumpkins were originally grown for use as food, not decoration, but they just lend so well to brightening up seasonal decor!
Embroidery Hoop Pumpkin Carving
No worries- there is no such thing! These are impressionist and artistic pumpkins – not Jack-O-Lanterns! And that means you don’t have to do any carving. They are so much easier than dealing with “real” pumpkins AND you can use these fabric pumpkins year after year instead of having to toss them out in a few weeks. These should last you a long time.
Easy Embroidery Hoop Pumpkin
To make the pumpkin you will need three embroidery hoops. I didn’t have any of these on hand, so I bought them on Amazon! I picked a variety back so I could have a few different sizes to make the arrangement more eye appealing when done. It is always nice to switch things up a bit.
You can also get hoops at your local Dollar Tree. Both are a lot less expensive than your local craft store prices like what I saw at my local Hobby Lobby.
Best Embroidery Hoops
So – I like these that I found on Amazon and have used them a few times:
Caydo 8 pieces bamboo embroidery hoops are made of high-quality natural bamboo. Bamboo is a kind of wood with the best elasticity, which makes it an ideal material for fabric hoops. The product has a smooth surface without burrs and is safe for the human body. It can be used in many fields, such as embroidery, needlecraft, quilting and wall decoration, etc. The list of DIY ideas is almost endless if you look on Pinterest.
While there are mixed reviews for this on Amazon, I have had great luck with them and for the price? I can’t complain. I rarely use these more than once so I am looking at crafting specifically with these, not a repetitive embroidery hoop use. For simply holding a piece of fabric? These have rocked every time.
What kind of fabric should you use for these easy crafts?
I would stay away from flannel shirts, green fabric, or even that old sweater that you want to cut up and remember. Sweater material is simply too thick for this kind of craft.
I like to use scrap fabric from my craft stash or find some great calico that is often in season and on sale at my local JoAnn Fabrics. Fabric fat quarters are the perfect way to get a variety of plaids without spending a lot of money.
Any time I can save money on craft supplies I consider it a great bargain. Another idea? Check your local thrift store for sheets and table cloths that are cut-up-able.
These are easy to customize!
Mix and match colors and patterns to create a personalized set of Plaid Hoop Pumpkins. With such a quick and easy project, you will find yourself making these for family, friends, co-workers, or even the kids’ teachers. Your family and friends will never know how quick and easy these trendy Plaid Hoop Pumpkins were to create!
These would also be great ideas for that local craft show – if your area is having them again.
Add a little floral wire or pipe cleaner to the inner hoop as you are assembling it and you have the perfect craft project for your front door!

How to make your DIY Embroidery Hoop Pumpkins:
STEP ONE
To begin, gather all of your quick craft supplies. Paint the outside and top edge of the outer hoop of the three embroidery hoop side pieces with the dark brown acrylic craft paint. Set them aside to dry.
STEP TWO
Fit the plaid fabrics loosely into the embroidery hoops. Pull fabric gently from the back to ensure the fabric is taught and then tighten the screw at the top of the hoop. Trim the excess fabric from the back of the hoop with scissors. Apply a thin line of Fabric Glue to the cut edge of the fabric to secure it and prevent it from fraying. Set them aside to dry.
STEP THREE
Cut large, medium, and small rectangles of dark green and olive green felt, then cut out a football or leaf shape with scissors. Apply a hot dab of glue to each leaf tip, and fold in half to create dimension.
STEP FOUR
Cut long, skinny rectangles of dark brown felt for the pumpkin stems. Fold felt in half, and thread through the screw at the top of the hoop. Open the loop, insert the cut ends into the loop and pull tight to create the pumpkin stems. Trim any excess with scissors.
STEP FIVE
Cut several lengths of the natural jute twine and tie in a knot around the stem of the hoop pumpkins. Trim any excess with scissors. To finish, attach felt leaves to the top of the embroidery hoop pumpkins with a dab of hot glue.
