French toast is a popular breakfast food that can be served in many different ways. This Tasty French Toast Bake recipe will give you the perfect opportunity to enjoy this favorite dish for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
We all love entertaining family and friends, especially after having been locked down away for them for such a long time. The trick is to actually be able to enjoy the time with them, instead of having to be chained to the stove while everyone else socializes. This Tasty French Toast Bake is perfect for just that kind of situation!
How to Make a Tasty French Toast Bake
You can make this ahead of time and then just pop it into the oven to bake just before your guests arrive. While I know your family will love it, it’s also a great dish to serve if you have people over for brunch. This is a make-ahead recipe that needs to be refrigerated overnight (or at least for a few hours) so it is even perfect for that Christmas morning treat.
What kind of a baking dish do you use for this tasty French Toast Bake?
For this easy recipe of baked French toast, I prefer a 9×13″ pan. You could use a pie pan for your easy french toast casserole but you would be better off with just a half recipe with that size. If you are using this on your holiday brunch, I suggest the best way to whip it up is in the larger baking pan.
What is the best bread to use for French toast?
You can make this Tasty French Toast Bake with any type of bread, but I prefer to use a thick-sliced bread. This will help ensure that the center is cooked through without becoming too dry. You could also try using Challah or Brioche bread which is both known for their eggy flavor and soft texture. Some people even like using their homemade cinnamon rolls! Italian Bread or sourdough bread would work also – I love to check the day-old section of the bakery department at my grocery store to find a bargain-priced base. No matter what you choose for your bread cubes, the custard mixture will help you create the best easy breakfast.
How can you make this dish healthier?
You can use coconut milk, whole wheat bread, etc. I will say if this is for a holiday morning, just go for it- use the real recipe. It is a delicious breakfast and a little bit goes a long way.
How do you store your Tasty French Toast Recipe?
Let it fully cool and put it into an airtight container. It should keep in the fridge for up to four days, but it usually is gone the next day.
Tasty french toast bake made with French bread
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 12 eggs
- 3 cups whole milk – you could use skim or fat-free if you want. Heavy cream would work beautifully if you aren’t worried about the fat content.
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste or real vanilla extract
French Toast Breakfast Casserole Directions
Grease or spray casserole dish. If you use a casserole dish you may be able to use a full loaf of French bread.
Take your thick-cut white bread and cut it into 1-2” cubes.
Heat the butter and brown sugar on the stove over medium heat until the butter melted and the brown sugar has dissolved.
In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla bean paste. Whisk this french toast batter well.
Pour brown sugar and melted butter mixture into the prepared pan for your breakfast bake.
Top it with cubed French bread.
Pour egg mixture over the bread pieces. Toss it around a bit until every piece is fully coated. It should be almost like a bread pudding texture.
Cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. I prefer to make it in advance and just bake it off the next morning.
Bake your french toast casserole recipe at 350*F for 30-45 minutes or until the bread is no longer soggy. The actual time will depend on the type of milk and bread you used, as well as your own oven settings.
If you use too much milk, you may find your casserole is still soggy at the bottom. If this happens, use a spatula to flip parts of the casserole over, and continue baking for another 10-15 minutes.
You can top this with a powdered sugar glaze, a bowl of sliced fresh fruit, or even with a cup of maple syrup.
I’ve tried this recipe a few times and cooking times vary greatly depending on the amount of bread and milk as well as the type of bread you use, so be sure to keep an eye on it after about 30 minutes!
