What is Reindeer Christmas Cake?
Reindeer Christmas cake is a festive, reindeer-shaped cake that is often served around the holidays and is in no way made with real animals. It’s made with your favorite cake mix – either chocolate or vanilla – and decorated with reindeer features like antlers, eyes, and a nose. How do you melt chocolate without a double boiler?
Melting chocolate without a double boiler is easy! All you need to do is get a heat-safe bowl, such as glass or stainless steel, and place it over a pot of simmering water. Be sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Then add your chopped up chocolate and stir until it’s melted.
You can also use a microwave to melt chocolate, just be sure to stir every 30 seconds or so.
Can you make the cake base from scratch instead of using a mix?
Absolutely! You can easily whip up a reindeer cake from scratch using your favorite cake recipe. However, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to make reindeer cakes, then the mix option is ideal. We recommend trying out both versions to see which one you prefer!
For ease of the grocery list and for saving a few bucks, I like to go with the boxed cake mix. They are even at your local dollar store – for $1.25 now, LOL
Reindeer Christmas Cake Ingredients:
- Chocolate cake mix + additional ingredients per directions, usually eggs, oil, and water.
- Cocoa buttercream – to frost the entire cake
- Vanilla buttercream – for putting into the center of the cake
- Milk chocolate frosting – for making the reindeer eyes
- Chocolate bark – we will melt these for the antlers
- Maraschino cherry – If it is a Rudolph cake, he has to have a nose, right? If you want a regular reindeer, then you will need a chocolate candy melt
- Antler template – easy to find on the internet, but we have one for you below
- Waxed paper
- Nonstick baking spray
How to make a Reindeer Cake:
Place the antler template printout on a baking sheet and cover them with the waxed paper
Melt the chocolate and stir until smooth.
Cool the chocolate slightly and pour it into a piping bag.
Cut a small tip opening from the bag and trace the antlers by piping the chocolate over the template. I like to start by outlining them.
Then I go in and color inside the lines!
Place the chocolate antlers in the freezer to set up and harden.
Preheat the oven according to what recipe you use.
Prepare 2 round cake pans by spraying them with nonstick baking spray.
Make the cake batter per recipe and fill your round cake pans.
Bake the cakes as the boxed mix or recipe instructs you to.
Cool the cakes completely.
Place one cake on a serving platter or cake plate and top with a generous layer of vanilla buttercream, spreading it out so it almost reaches the edge of the cake.
Place the 2nd cake on top of the first. Frost completely with the cocoa buttercream with a semi-smooth finish.
Place the cherry near the bottom of the cake for the nose.
Use the milk chocolate frosting to pipe the closed eyes and, if you wish, a little swirl of hair on top of the cake.
Remove the antlers from the freezer a peel them off the waxed paper.
Carefully press the antlers into the cake.
