I know I have talked before about Miss Sarah and the pizza craze. Typical teenager, I think she could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I have talked about our Supreme Pizza Soup, our Easy Peasy Pizza Casserole Recipe, and even our Pizza Dip. Pretty much any way I can turn pizza into a meal for the kiddo, I have been able to do it. What the heck, before I create a pizza salad, I wanted to try a twist on Monkey Bread and that is how this Bubble Up Pizza Casserole was born.
Bubble Up Pizza Casserole
Why do we like pizza so much? Cheese is fatty, meat toppings tend to be rich and the sauce is sweet. Pizza toppings are also packed with a compound called glutamate, which can be found in the tomatoes, cheese, pepperoni and sausage. When glutamate hits our tongues, it tells our brains to get excited — and to crave more of it.
How can you make pizza healthier? Dieticians would give you a lot of different answers, but it is really pretty simple. Less meat and more veggies. Go with low-fat cheese and possibly a low-sodium pizza sauce. If you can find wheat refrigerator biscuits, even better! This recipe is super easy to customize to whatever choices you want to make. My only tip on the veggies? Sautee them first before adding to this casserole.
You will need: 1 ½ lb. ground beef 1 jar pizza sauce 2 tubes refrigerator biscuits 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Directions: Brown the beef in a skillet and drain.
Mix pizza sauce hamburger and simmer until heated through.
Quarter the biscuits and place in a 13-in x 9-in x 2-in greased baking dish.
Top with beef mixture.
Bake uncovered at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes.
Sprinkle with cheeses and bake 5-10 more minutes.
Now grab all the teens you can find to rip into this bubble up pizza casserole like a monkey on a cupcake. It will be gone before you know it.
