What is moonshine?

Moonshine was originally a slang term for high-proof liquor that was and continues to be produced illicitly, without government authorization. The name was derived from a tradition of creating the alcohol during the nighttime, to avoid detection. Nowadays, there is no need to hide in the middle of the night and create your treat.

Why is moonshine still illegal?

One simple word: money. The government makes a killing off of excise taxes and when someone makes it and sells it themselves? They don’t get to collect the cash. Uncle Sam takes an excise tax of $2.14 for each 750-milliliter bottle of 80-proof spirits, compared with 21 cents for a bottle of wine (of 14 percent alcohol or less) and 5 cents for a can of beer.
Ouch!

What type of alcohol is moonshine?

Traditionally it is whisky or rum-based. That is why my coconut moonshine starts out with Everclear and then adds rum. Everclear is a brand name of a neutral-tasting, very potent grain alcohol that is an unaged spirit.

Does Coconut Frosted Doughnut Moonshine go bad?

In short, moonshine, like other plain spirits, does not really go bad. This means moonshine has an indefinite shelf life unless you are dealing with a flavored option (which can spoil as a result of its high sugar density). That is why this recipe for Coconut Frosted Doughnut Moonshine, while it takes 4 weeks to “cure”, should be consumed within roughly a month after it is ready.

Is moonshine toxic?

In the old days, with the backcountry stills, you had to worry about toxins leaking into your booze from the metals used to make the stills like lead as well as the fact that some people used methyl alcohol (methanol) is the bad stuff that could be found in moonshine. Pure methanol is very dangerous and it is definitely able to cause blindness and even kill people. As little as 10 ml of pure methanol could blind someone and as little as 30 ml could kill someone.

How can you tell if your moonshine is poisonous?

According to Very Well Mind:

How Can You Tell If Moonshine Is Safe? Folklore tells us one way to test the purity of moonshine is to pour some in a metal spoon and set it on fire. 6 If it burns with a blue flame it is safe, but if it burns with a yellow or red flame, it contains lead, prompting the old saying, “Lead burns red and makes you dead.”

    • Something went bad wrong! Done exactly what the recipe said, undrinkable, way too strong. I was excited because it looked really good

      • Have you ever had Moonshine before? It IS really strong. That is the Everclear Base – that stuff is really powerful, LOL. You could try this with vanilla vodka for less of a kick.

    • This sounds fantastic to have on hand for a special event. But do you have to refrigerate all of it for the duration or just the open jar after you strain and reseal it?
