We just moved into a new house, full of unfamiliar appliances, and several new electrical items. Naturally, I was curious as to how much it costs to run all these new doo-dads.
Voila! Now, there’s an easy way!
The Plug2Know is a very handy litle gadget that measures, over time, the estimated cost of electricity for anything that’s plugged into it.
As soon as it arrived, I grabbed it & started putzing with it. Using the five multicolor LED’s, it flashes a code which you then compare to the included chart. This chart shows a national average rate per KWh of electricity, although if you go online to their website, you can look it up by state, thus providing a more accurate figure.
Our new house has a new energy efficient refrigerator, so I decided that that was a great candidate for the Plug2Know. I plugged the fridge into Plug2Know, then plugged that into the outlet, then left it alone for two days.
This gives the Plug2Know time to plot an average, based on the amount of actual times the appliance is running. During this time, I noticed that the Plug2Know was making several changing estimates as it zeroed in. By the end of the second day, it settled on a reading.
Using the more-accurate chart for my state (WI), I found that the fridge was costing $6.89 per month to run. I’m sure this is a great improvement on our 1980’s vintage refrigerator at the old house! This helps us plan for $6.89 a month in our budget…but the budget is a story for another day.
My only suggestion to the manufacturer would be to instruct the Plug2Know user to find out the actual KWh rate from their own electric bill, then match THAT to a matching online chart for that given rate. This would provide an even more accurate result, but it would make things slightly more complex.
Overall, the Plug2Know is a very nice and simple item that I will be using for years to hone down our power consumption. It’s a winner!
Now for the really cool part? We get to give one away to some lucky reader! Just follow the instructions and good luck
