For many people looking to start a small business or work from home, it’s hard to know what’s necessary when trying to set up a productive office environment, especially if you have children you need to care for! It’s easy to fall into the trap of outfitting the place with unnecessary décor or tech, but in truth, you should try to take a less-is-more approach with these things. Unnecessary items lead to clutter, and your goal should be to create an environment that is easy to organize, simple to clean, and functions as a comfortable workspace for you and your fellow employees (or kids!).

Fast Internet

Instead of opting for a simple, run-of-the-mill internet setup, you should consider investing in a high-speed modem which allows you to get online work completed at a much faster rate.

When you have multiple projects underway on split screens, children online doing homework, and other appliances running, a standard internet connection can leave you high and dry. It will lag out, potentially crash, and you won’t be able to get anything done. Although you may not be uploading massive files or have an integrated server to manage, faster internet begets productivity. You can achieve more in your workday if your speed zips without interference.

Comfortable Chairs

This might seem like a simple silly suggestion but hear me out. If you plan on conducting the majority of your work from your office space, even if it’s at home, you’re going to spend hours sitting in the same chair. If that chair is uncomfortable in any way, or it doesn’t offer the back support you need, you will end up irritated and riddled with mystery pains.

Investing in comfortable, ergonomic chairs will make your time at work much healthier. Some of the best office chairs are made by manufacturer Herman Miller, but there are other, less expensive alternatives that can get the job done.

High-Speed Printers

Even though paper is going out of style, it’s still essential for most families or small businesses. Whether it’s printing out lesson plans, recipes or client information, printers are still very much a part of our lives. In the past, high-speed printers were extremely expensive and were owned by industrial scale operations and certain companies that could afford them. Luckily, times have changed.

Nowadays, it’s possible to get a highly functional and affordable high-speed printer to streamline your office’s printing needs. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to research types of printers, and to invest in one that can manage your workload. Nothing is worse than running up against a deadline and finding that your printer is incapable of pumping out pages on time.

Collaborative Calendar

If you want your small business to be successful, you need to meet deadlines and make sure that you aren’t missing out on any important occasions. This may sound like an obvious note, but you’d be surprised how difficult it can be to stay organized if it’s just you running your operation. The key is to keep yourself accountable and make sure you have time set aside where you don’t allow yourself to be distracted by family or small tasks. The best solution for this is a noticeable calendar which you can’t ignore.

Using a calendar, you can better visualize the upcoming months, and make sure that you stay on top of projects that might have extended deadlines. Being organized can also help you manage stress and give enough time to your family when they need you.

Office Supplies

As I said before, most first-time business owners attempt to fill their office space to the brim with supplies. One year down the road, most of those items get thrown out, if you haven’t lost them already! You only need a few, critically important items, but outside of these you should only pick up additional items on an as-needed basis.

One of the most important office items, whether you’re based out of your home or out of a workspace, is a high-quality surge protector. It will keep your electronics safe and provide a handful of outlets when there might have only been a few.

Of course, the success of your small business is going to come down to your ability to execute on the promises you make to your clients. Achieving that goal is hard enough, so you should do what you can to ensure that your office is running smoothly and filled with only the most essential supplies. Keep your office space bright, minimal, and don’t be shy about putting up inspirational quotes that help drive home your mission.
