Sushi has a lot of varieties. In fact, so many that people now consider that sushi is almost any dish that’s served alongside raw fish. Matter of fact, sushi is often served with food that’s fully cooked in the western world, including smoked salmon, cooked imitation crab, grilled octopus or squid, fully cooked clam, and fully cooked shrimp. It’s also served with battered and fried seafood of varying types. You can also find a lot of vegetarian sushi dishes like maki, also known as cucumber rolls, which is very popular.

In the western world, sushi is thought of as raw fish a lot. The reason for this is probably because the dishes are usually served cold, whatever the topping is. Also, people in the western world don’t actually like the idea of raw fish, so that form stood out more when it was introduced first. This gave rise to the notion that sushi is almost any dish that is served with raw fish.


Sushi is literally translated as “it’s sour”. This comes from an ancient grammatical form that’s not used anymore. The description “sour” comes from the ancient way of making sushi by fermentation of the meat which was usually seafood. It would be packed in rice and they used salt as a preservative. The fermentation of rice would produce the vinegar which would break the meat down into healthy amino acids. This would then result in a strong. This flavor is one of the five tastes that the human tongue is able to detect. When the fermentation of the meat is over, the rice would be discarded and only meat would be consumed. In simple words, this was a simple way to preserve meat before refrigerators and ice boxes were introduced.


Sashimi is translated as “pierced body”. This word originates from the fact that the dish would have the fish fins or tails fixed to the meat. This would allow you to easily check what mean belongs to what fish. The second reason is that when the fish for sashimi is caught, its brains would be pierced to kill the fish without causing any damage to the meat. Also, this is minimizing lactic acid in the meat and allowing storing the fish for longer. The fish would be put in ice immediately after piercing its brain.
