What is Moonshine?
Moonshine refers to homemade or illicitly distilled alcohol, typically made in small quantities without proper licenses or regulations. The term originated during the Prohibition era in the United States when the production, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages were illegal. Moonshine was produced clandestinely, often at night (“under the moon”), in hidden stills located in remote areas.
Moonshine is traditionally made from fermented grains, such as corn, barley, or wheat, although other ingredients like fruits or sugar can also be used. The process involves converting the starches in the grains into sugar through fermentation and then distilling the resulting liquid to increase its alcohol content. The name “moonshine” comes from the fact that the product is typically clear and colorless, resembling the shine of the moon.
It’s important to note that making or consuming moonshine without proper permits and licenses is illegal in many countries due to safety concerns. Homemade moonshine can be potentially dangerous as it may contain impurities or be produced using unsafe practices. Therefore, it is always advisable to obtain alcohol from legal and regulated sources.
What if you start with Everclear?
If you start with Everclear, a high-proof grain alcohol, it can be used as a base for making moonshine. Everclear is a commercially produced spirit that is already distilled to a high alcohol content, typically ranging from 151 to 190 proof (75.5% to 95% alcohol by volume).
Using Everclear as a starting point for making moonshine can simplify the process, eliminating the need for fermenting grains or other ingredients. Instead, you can focus on infusing the Everclear with flavors and adjusting its strength to create a unique moonshine recipe.
To make moonshine using Everclear, you would typically combine it with various ingredients such as fruits, herbs, spices, or other flavorings. These ingredients can be macerated or infused in the Everclear to extract their flavors and create a customized spirit. However, it’s important to remember that using high-proof alcohol requires caution, and it should be handled safely and responsibly.
It is for personal use
It is essential to adhere to the laws and regulations regarding the production and distribution of alcohol in your jurisdiction. Homemade distillation or the sale of moonshine without proper permits and licenses is illegal in many places. Always ensure you are familiar with and comply with the legal requirements for alcohol production and consumption in your area.
What is a Mint Julep?
Mint Julep is a classic cocktail that originated in the southern United States, particularly associated with Kentucky. It is a refreshing and aromatic drink typically served in a silver or pewter cup over crushed ice. The Mint Julep has become particularly famous as the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, an iconic horse racing event held annually in Louisville, Kentucky.
The basic Mint Julep recipe consists of four main ingredients: bourbon whiskey, fresh mint leaves, sugar, and crushed ice. To prepare a Mint Julep, you begin by muddling (gently crushing) the mint leaves with sugar in the bottom of the cup to release their flavors and aromas. Then, bourbon whiskey is added, and the mixture is stirred until the sugar is dissolved. Finally, the cup is filled with crushed ice and garnished with a sprig of fresh mint.
The combination of aromatic mint, bourbon’s smoothness, and crushed ice’s chill creates a wonderfully refreshing and flavorful cocktail. Mint Juleps are often enjoyed during hot summer days as a cooling and invigorating libation.
It’s worth noting that there are variations of Mint Julep recipes that incorporate different types of spirits, such as rum or brandy, but the traditional version uses bourbon whiskey as the key ingredient. We are blending this classic with strawberries to make our tasty treat.
