Copper Clothespin DIY Mirror Frame: A Dollar Tree Craft
One project I recently completed was a copper clothespin mirror made from items I purchased at my local Dollar Tree. I have to say, I was tickled at how this DIY mirror frame turned out!
This is a dollar store project, so it’s easy to create and will not cost you more than the materials. All I purchased for this DIY was: a wire wreath form, a mirror, and clothespins. I had the rest of the stuff in my stash!
You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy frames for your mirror because you can make one for less than $5! All you need is our Dollar Tree craft of some copper colored clothespins. Check out our tutorial below to learn how to create this fun DIY mirror frame in just 10 minutes!
Copper Clothespin Mirror
DIY mirror frame Supplies Needed:
- 14-inch wire wreath form
- 3 packages of Dollar Tree clothespins
- Copper Spray Paint
- E6000 glue
- Hot Glue Gun
- 12 inch round mirror (I got mine from Michael’s with a coupon)
Instructions:
Now, let’s get to it. The first thing you need is a box of clothespins and some copper spray paint. I used the Rustoleum brand for mine. You can also use other colors, like black or silver if that better suits your needs! Make sure to shake up the can of spray paint before you start so the color will be evenly distributed.
Prep your base before painting
First, wash your clothespins in soap and water to get any leftover paint off from the manufacturing process before you spray them with new colors. I used a scrub brush for this step since it’s hard to reach around each pin with my fingers when they’re wet. This will also give your pins an even base coat of color so that they’ll show up better after you’re done.
Make a paint booth
It helps to make a “paint booth” before you start with the spray paint. It can be as simple as saving that nice-sized Amazon box. Only take the top off, leaving the sides to help catch the paint from coating the rocks or ground.
Start painting!
I sprayed my first coat on the front side of each pin, then turned around and sprayed the other side with my fingers positioned near the mouth of the can. I did this to try to avoid overspray getting into any folds or crevices that might be harder to clean up later if it dried there.
After they are dry, I turned them around and sprayed the backside, this time with my fingers in a slightly different position.
I tried to put a coat on each pin as quickly as possible after spraying so that it wouldn’t dry up too much and get hard to do paint coverage smoothly because of drips or clumps. Try not to take any more than an hour between coats or the paint will start to dry and it won’t be as easy.
Build your mirror frame
Start by opening the clip and clipping it onto the first and second wire sections. In the next one, you only clip the first part of the clothespin onto the second wire section. Repeat until you have the entire wreath covered.
Glue it together
Once all of the clothespins have been added, flip the wreath over and add some E6000 glue to every other clothespin, and then on the off clothespins add some glue. Then add the mirror on top of the glue. I then added some weight and let it sit overnight.
Give it some time
I let it sit for about 24 hours and then make a hanger for the back, by simply attaching a chenille stem to the wire wreath frame.
