Whether you’re studying hard, going to class, or heading out to catch the bus downtown, hunger can hit ya. You’re not ready for a full on meal and need something tasty to hold you over. Without having a fridge right there in you dorm, your options on what snacks you can keep around may seem limited. If you need ideas on examples of what snacks don’t require refrigeration, than you’ve come to the right place!

Dorm Room Snacks That Don't Require Refrigeration

Individual cups of applesauce or fruit cups  –  If you don’t mind the taste of room temp. fruit, both of these are fine to keep handy. Just don’t plan on eating part of one and then saving it for later. Depending on how hot it is in your dorm, it can go bad before you know it.

Cereal and granola  –  Who needs milk or yogurt to go with either of these when they’re tasty all on their own! Whether you’re looking for something healthy, something crunchy, or wanting to fill a sweet tooth, both cereal and granola can do the trick.

Rice cakes  –  Not everyone is a fan of a plain rice cake seeing they can be pretty bland. Styrofoam anyone? But these days they came in all sorts of tasty flavors – meaning these can take the place of chips. Also, if you get plain rice cakes, try spreading on some of your favorite nut butter, sprinkle on sesame or flax seeds and enjoy!

Fruit and dried fruit  –  Not all fruits can stay out of the fridge and last that long. Things like apples, bananas, and oranges will have no problem sitting on a shelf for a few days (and by few days, I don’t mean a month!). They’re healthy, tasty, and quick – which can be great if you’re busy studying and need a snack.

One tasty treat to try with an apple, is making a yummy dip from nut butter. Mix in any combination or all of the following: chopped nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, flax seeds, dried cranberries, or raisins. Slice your apple and start dipping!

If you’re not too keen on having fresh fruit in your dorm room, check into dried fruits. You can find all kinds of dried fruits in the store or if you have access to an oven at your parents’ or a friend’s house, try making your own.

Granola bars, Larabars  –  Having granola bars or Larabars on hand is a great way to add some fuel to the tank while you’re busy or on the go. They’re shelf stable and depending on what you get, fairly healthy.

Beef jerky  –  Protein! Technically, it doesn’t have to be beef. You can get jerky in practically any meat you can imagine. Packages of these will hold for a while and can really do the trick when you need something to munch on but you want to avoid all those carbs. You can also make your own jerky if you have a dehydrator, but you have to be very careful how you package the final product, because homemade jerky will go bad much faster than store bought.

This list is GREAT for making care packages for your favorite student — did we miss anything? What would YOU add to this list?
